The general characteristics of reform movements that emerged in the nineteenth century-

1. The nation was facing social challenges like sati, child marriage, widow re-marriage, Sex determination and feticides, and many more.

2. The reform movements of the 19th century include the temperance movement and movements related to the emancipation of women.

3. The temperance movement emphasized abolishing the use of alcoholic beverages and the consumption of the same. Social values and standard of living were degraded by the consumption of hard drinks. It caused poverty and conflicts in the family. The movement was also against the trade of liquor. The movement was highly effective in the rural states than the urban states.

4. Movements related to the emancipation of women demanded equal rights for women in the fields of education, corporate, and everything outside the shelter. Feminism became a prominent concept.
