It is belived that between 500 and 1700, small chieftains and nobels started becoming powerful and raised their independent kingdoms likes Rajputs, the Marathas,Sikhs,Jats,Ahoms and Kayasths. About 20 kingdoms had control over areas beyond their direct reign. Pulakeshin II (7{}{th} century) of chalukyan kingdom and Krisna II (mid 19{}{th} century) of the Rashtrakutas were two such kings. There was considerable conflict between these states. The existence of many rulers proved the emergence of new state forms, compared to the later Vedic and Classical periods.
