Gas exchange takes place in the millions of alveoli in the lungs and the capillaries that envelop them. As shown below, inhaled oxygen moves from the alveoli to the blood in the capillaries, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood in the capillaries to the air in the alveoli.

The alveoli of the lungs enables exchange of gases with the blood.

Explanation:

  • Respiration is the process through which oxygen is inhaled and carbon dioxide is exhaled.
  • The blood exchanges gases in the alveoli of lungs. Alveoli are small  thin sac like structures which hold the oxygen.
  • The protein Haemoglobin present in the Red Blood Cells of blood carry the carbon dioxide molecules to the lungs and are exchanged with oxygen molecules.
  • The Oxygenated blood enters heart and is then pumped throughout the body.
