The giant Gharial Crocodile and Mugger Crocodile are considered as one of the endangered species of Mahanadi Basin.

Mahanadi river is the most prominent river of East central India that covers the area of nearly 141,600 Sq. Km. Hirakud Dam is the main attraction of this river and the river is one of the important wildlife division of India formally known as Mahanadi Wildlife Division.
