The empty uterus is 7.5 centimetre long and 5 centimetre broad and about 2.5 centimetre thick. Lining of the uterine layer, called endometrium (membrane consisting of mucous), consists of an epithelium and lamina propria of connective tissue. Endometrium shows cyclic changes during the reproductive period of females. The phenomenon is known as menstrual cycle. To maintain the endometrial lining in it he uterine wall the hormones progesterone and estrogen are used. Corpus luteum secretes progesterone, ordinarily, it causes further thickening of the endometrial lining. FSH or follicle stimulating hormone promotes maturation of ovarian or graffian follicle. The latter secretes estrogen. Oestrogen performs and promotes the proliferation of the endometrial lining causing the layer to go off, where graffian follicle even gets converted or changed into corpus luteum, and the cyclic changes continue.
