There are two kinds of endoplasmic reticulum:

  1. Rough endoplasmic reticulum: Ribosomes( an amembranous organelle that synthesises protein) are attached to this. RER synthesises proteins. They surround the nuclear envelop.
  2. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum: It is free of ribosomes. SER synthesises lipids. They are placed after RER.
