Endoplasmic reticulum, one of the cell organelles, exists as a membranous network that extends from outer membrane of nucleus to the plasma membrane making a connection between them. Which of the following statements is not related to the endoplasmic reticulum? *
(a) It behaves as transport channel for proteins between nucleus and cytoplasm.
(b) It transports materials between various regions in cytoplasm.
(c) It can be the site of energy generation.
(d) It can be the site of some biochemical activities of the cell.
Answers
Answer: (c)
ER does all the above except produce energy, which mitochondria does
✝️ Out of the four options, the one which is not the function of Endoplasmic Reticulum is:
✒ Option C
✏In a cell, the site of energy production is Mitocondria. The mitocondria oxidises food to produce energy. Similarly, Endiplasmic reticulum deals with other functions like it haves as a cytoplasmic skeleton and other functions. Here, is a brief explanation about ER.
✳ Endoplasmic Reticulum:
The Endoplasmic reticulum is found in the eukaryotic(advanced nucleus) cell, but it is absent in mature RBCs of mammals and also absent in the prokaryotic cell.
Depending upon the presence or absence of ribosomes, The ER is of two types:
- Rough ER (Ribosomes ✔)
- Smooth ER (Ribosomes ✖)
⏹ Refer to the attachment for diagram....!!
The Rough ER have ribosomes attached on its surface hence they are most prominently found in Goblet cells, Plasma cells etc. And the smooth ER is found in liver cells, adipose cells because they helps in synthesis of lipids and detoxification of drugs.
☢ Functions:
✏They helps in maintaining the framework of cell. It's large surface area is helpful for various metabolic activities in the cell.
✏ They act as internal transport system, it means they provides a pathway for the transport of various substances like proteins in the cell.
✏They help in the synthesis, storage and transport of various metabolic products like proteins, lipids etc. Some of proteins acts as enzymes and hormones.
✏ This is a very important function that ER helps in building the membrane which is also known as Memebrane biogenesis. The proteins from Rough ER and lipids from Smooth ER helps in the formation of Plasma membrane.
