The diverse functions of the ER are performed by distinct domains; consisting of tubules, sheets and the nuclear envelope. there are two types of ER one is rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and the second is smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) the RER has on it ribosomes, which are small, round organelles whose function it is to make those proteins.

SER do not have ribosomes but RER have ribosomes. SER mainly produce and export lipids and protein and function for detoxification.
