food chain is unidirectional because the energy is not to flow backwards,where as in a food web it is not like that.in an food chain the sunlight trapped by the plant can't be given back to the sun as it can't.as in the same way the other organisms which gain energy from the plant can't return it back.hence food chain is unidirectional.
