When one phosphate group is removed by breaking a phosphoanhydride bond in a process called hydrolysis, energy is released, and ATP is converted to adenosine diphosphate (ADP). Likewise, energy is also releasedwhen a phosphate is removed from ADP to form adenosine monophosphate (AMP).
