Energy transfer is said to be unidirectional because when the energy is absorbed by autotrophs from the sun, it is never reabsorbed by it. Similarly when consumers eat up the producers directly or indirectly the energy transferred in this process can never be reversed in the food chain

This means that the energy absorbed by autotrophs cannot revert back to solar input. Similarly, the energy passed on to the primary consumers or heterotrophs cannot be obtained again by the autoptrophs. The food energy that has been utilised and passed on to the next trophic level cannot be utilised by the previous trophic level again.
This is what is meant by the unidirectional transfer of energy.
