Actually compound sentences are jointed by two or more simple sentences or clauses. 

like, I like chocolate ice cream .......(simple sentence 1)
       My friend likes strawberry........(simple sentence 2)

so, I like chocolate ice cream, but my friend likes strawberry. (this is the compound sentence)

ex : My husband was working, so I went shopping.
