Q4. Read the following extract from the story.
When went in to comfort the children, Jon asked, "Daddy, are we going to die?" I tried to assure him that we
could make it. "But, Daddy," he went on, "we aren't afraid of dying, if we can all be together - you and
Mummy, Sue and I."
I could find no words with which to respond, but I left the children's cabin determined to fight the sea with
everything I had. To protect the weakened starboard side, I decided to heave-to-with the undamaged port
hull facing the oncoming waves using an improvised sea anchor of heavy nylon rope and two 22 litre plastic
barrels of paraffin.
That evening, Mary and I sat together holding hands, as the motion of the ship brought more and more
water in through the broken planks. We both felt the end was very near.
On the basis of your understanding of the above extract in particular and the whole
account in general, answer the following questions:
- What personal and family values are evident in the above extract?
- What light does the extract throw on the professional acumen of the narrator?
.- What do you learn about the relationship of the Captain and his wife from the extract? Do
you think they are an ideal couple? Why/Why not?

Answer:

- What personal and family values are evident in the above extract?

The family is deeply connected to each-other, as evident from the child's saying that he's not afraid to die if they die together.

- What light does the extract throw on the professional acumen of the narrator?

The narrator is a skilled writer with a good grammar, but not good at writing memoir or at giving presentations. The storytelling way is very clumsy, and one sentence does not connects well with another.

.- What do you learn about the relationship of the Captain and his wife from the extract? Do  you think they are an ideal couple? Why/Why not?

They sat together watching their end approaching towards them, holding each other's hand. This shows their relationship was a loving one. They make an ideal couple, as any good couple with a strong bond would support each other in their difficult times, rather than going crazy at the situation and yelling at each other for the blame.
