Shylock lends money to Antonio as part of a plan to get rid of him. Though he initially figures that Antonio is “sufficient” (he has enough money to be considered in a business proposition), Shylock despises him, vowing not to “catch him once upon the hip” and to not forgive him.Antonio was unable to lend a sum of three thousand ducats to Bassanio as all his fortunes were invested in the cargoes which his ships were carrying upon the sea . He neither had money nor commodity to raise the present sum.Shylock agrees to lend money to Bassanio in a 'kind' way, that is, he says he will give them money on zero percent financing. However, immediately after this, he urges Bassanio and Antonio to come to the notary with him so that he can add a little clause to their deal just for a joke.
