Explanation:
The door opened slowly and he saw that there was darkness everywhere in the house.
Only in one room there was a gleam of light. He found his way to that room. As he neared the room, he heard the heart-rending cry of a woman. He was frightened at first but soon gained courage and went forward. He peeped through an open window and was surprised to see that three persons wearing black jackets were standing around a middle-aged woman. They were trying to get some secret out of her. One of them seemed to be the leader of the group. He had a whip in his hand and his face was red with anger. He was mercilessly lashing the helpless woman.
The intruder then took out a pistol and when he fired a shot, perhaps to warn the other members of the gang, his hand shook and he shot at one man. Seeing this, the other men out of fear, ran away from the scene.
The lady told her story, how she was caught by the gang of conspirators, who wanted a big sum as ransom from her husband. These people were smugglers, and traded in contraband goods.
The whole story was reported to the Police Station by the witness who was taken by them for further inquiries to various places. There he recognised two culprits, who had run away.
After about a week, when the building was fully searched, a lot of arms and smuggled goods were seized. All the members of the gang were also arrested. The witness was awarded by the government for his alertness and bravery.
