Answer:

Functions of Endoplasmic reticulum :

The major function of smooth endoplasmic reticulum is lipid biosynthesis and the detoxification of the body from drugs consumed and metabolic wastes produced.

The major function of rough endoplasmic reticulum is protein synthesis and their folding into proper quaternary structures.

Functions of golgi apparatus :

(i) The main function of Golgi apparatus is to carry out the processing of proteins generated in endoplasmic reticulum.

(ii) Golgi apparatus also transports protein to the different parts of cell.

(iii) The Golgi enzymes present in membranous disks of cisternae carry out the modification of cargo proteins.

(iv) To carry out the glycosylation and phosphorylation processes, nucleotide sugars are imported by the Golgi apparatus from cytosol.

(v) Polysaccharides are attached with proteins in order to form carbohydrates.

(vi) One of the tasks of Golgi apparatus is carrying out the breakdown of proteins and formation of small, active fragments.

(vii) Sulfate groups are added to protein molecules in the Golgi apparatus.

(viii) Incorporation of phosphate molecules onto molecules of proteins is also an important task carried out in the Golgi apparatus.

(ix) Transportation of lipids around cells and creation of lysosomes are the important functions carried out by Golgi apparatus.

(x) Synthesis of proteoglycans is carried out by the Golgi body. The proteoglycans are found in extracellular matrix of animal cells.

Answer:

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) serves important functions particularly in the synthesis, folding, modification, and transport of proteins. Differences in certain physical and functional characteristics distinguish the two types of ER, known as rough ER (RER) and smooth ER (SER).

The Golgi apparatus is responsible for transporting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids into vesicles for delivery to targeted destinations. As the secretory proteins move through the Golgi apparatus, a number of chemical modifications may transpire.
