The different types of spinal postural deformities and the causes of kyphosis and precautions to avoid it are as follows:

  • The common spinal postural deformities are scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis.
  • Kyphosis involves the upper back curving forward and is the condition that can create the form of a hump. Lordosis is known as swayback.
  • Some of the causes of kyphosis are poor posture in childhood, such as slouching, leaning back in chairs and carrying heavy schoolbags, which can cause the ligaments and muscles that support the vertebrae to stretch.
  • It can also pull the thoracic vertebrae out of their normal position.
  • There are three types of kyphosis: Postural kyphosis, Scheuermann's kyphosis and Congenital kyphosis.
  • Kyphosis is prevented by being aware of body posture and also by taking care of the back.
  • One should encourage the child to avoid slouching and sit correctly or sit upright, ensuring that all of the back is supported behind.
