soap =it is a sodium &potassium long chain of carboxylic acid are called soap it is used for only soft water
detergent it is a ammonium and sulphonate with long chain of carboxylic acid it is used for both hard and soft water

Detergents are ammonium or sulphate salts of long chain hydrocarbons from petroleum.
Soaps are easily degraded.
Detergents are non-biodegradable.
