it is term used in agricultural science,it means removal of plants or parts of plants  to make place for other plants or crops.

The removal of a proportion of trees in a forest crop is called thinning of crops..........Thinning also provides the farmer an immediate source of timber revenue before the final crop is cut down at the end of the rotation.........
