An article is sold for Rs 500 and hence a loss is incurred. Had the article been sold for Rs 700, the shopkeeper would have gained three times the former loss. What is the cost price of the article ?

Answer :

Given :

☞ Selling price 1 = 500

☞ Selling price 2 = 700

☞ Gain = 3 times of loss

Find :

Cost price .

According to the question :

Case 1 :

☞ Selling price = Rs. 500

☞ Let the Loss = Rs. x

☞ It's Cost price = ( 500 + x )..... ( 1 st E )

Case 2 :

☞ Selling price = Rs. 700

☞ 3 times of loss

☞ so, 3 times of ' x '

Equation :

Rs. ( selling prices - Loss ) = Rs. 3 times of loss

☞ Rs. ( 700 - 500 - x ) = 3x

☞ ( 700 - 500 ) = 3x + x

☞ 4x = ( 700 + 500 )

☞ 4x = 200

☞ x = 200 / 4

x = 50.

1 st equation :

The cost price = Rs ( 500 + x )

= Rs. ( 500 + 50 )

= Rs. 550.

Option B , Cost price = 550
