The first five steps are regarded as the preparatory (or investment) phase, since they consume energy to convert the glucose into two three-carbon sugar phosphates (G3P). The first step in glycolysis is phosphorylation of glucose by a family of enzymes called hexokinases to form glucose 6-phosphate (G6P).

The activated, "high energy" carriers NADH and ATP are produced in energy conserving steps. Reactions of glycolysis are catalyzed and regulated by key enzymes: Glucose -> glucose 6-phosphate is catalyzed by glucokinase in the vertebrate liver but hexokinase elsewhere.
