In southern Africa Veld is a type of wide open rural landscape . Especially in countries such as South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana it is a flat area covered by grass or low scrub.

Explanation:

  • Velds are rolling plateaux of 600 m to 1100 meters in height. It is linked to the east by the mountains of Drakensburg. Kalahari desert reads westward. On the north-east, the high velds reach over 1600 meters in certain places. Due to the influence of the Indian Ocean, the velds have a mild climate. Cold and dry winters.
  • Temperatures range from 5°C to 10°C, and the coldest month is July. Short and warm are the summers. In the summer months from November to February the velds receive rainfall. The reason for this is mainly the warm ocean currents on the banks of the plains. Drought can occur if the rainfall is scarce between June and August in the winter months.
  • There is sparse in vegetation cover. The landscape overlooks grasses. In bush velds, red grass grows. Acacia and maroola grow in the high velds. The veld animals are mainly lions, leopards, cheetah and Kudu.
  • Velds are known for mining and cattle rearing and mining.. Because of discontinuous grass exposures to the uncleared surface, the soils are not fertile in the velds. However, the land is produced with fertile soil. The main crops are maize, wheat, barley, oats and potato. Cash crops such as  sugarcane, cotton, and tobacco, are also grown
  • The most important work of the people is sheep raising.  Sheep are mainly grown for wool, and the wool industry in velds has been brought into being. Sheep from the Merino family is popular with a very warm wool. The next major occupation is dairy farming. In the warmer and weather regions cattle are grown, and milk products like butter are made for domestic supply as well as for export.
  • Velds contain a rich reserve of minerals, where coal and iron are present, Iron and steel industry has developed. Diamond and gold  mining are major occupations of the people in this region
