Ryotwari system

  • Ryotwari is a land revenue system introduced by Thomas Munro in the end of the 18th century
  • Under this system the land revenue was directly paid to the state by the farmers
  • It also gave the cultivators or the ryots full rights regarding the sale of land

The problems faced by indigo plantation workers are listed below

  1. The ryot was committed to grow indigo on at least 25% of his hand holding. Which made them to live in a constant debt trap
  2. Lack of supervision of the subordinates led to exploitation of indigo plantation workers
  3. Constant exploitation of money lender which further increased their misery
  4. Lower cost for the produce.
  5. Indigo was down in the soil best suited for rice (commercialization of agriculture) .
