Enumerate the measures taken to protect the biodiversity?
Answers
Control the causes of significant injury to biodiversity [Article 8(l)], and adopt measures to avoid or minimize adverse impacts on biodiversity [Article 10(b)].
Establish Protected Areas. Establish a system of protected areas and take measures to promote environmentally sound development in areas adjacent to protected areas [Article 8(a & e)].
Manage and Protect Biological Resources for Conservation and Sustainable Use. Both within and outside of protected areas, manage biological resources to ensure conservation and sustainable use; promote the protection of ecosystems, natural habitats and maintenance of viable species populations in natural surroundings; develop laws to protect threatened species or populations [Article 8].
Restore Damaged Ecosystems and Threatened Species. Rehabilitate and restore ecosystems and promote recovery of threatened species [Article 8].
Ensure "Biosafety." Control the risks of the use and release of genetically modified organisms likely to have adverse impacts on biodiversity [Article 8(g)]. (Article 19(3) also requires parties to consider a possible protocol to the CBD on biosafety.)
Create Conservation Incentives. Create incentives for the conservation and sustainable use of components of biological diversity [Article 11].
Promote Public Education. Promote and encourage public understanding of biodiversity conservation [Article 13].
Protect and Apply Traditional Knowledge and Conservation Practices. Protect, preserve, and maintain knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. Promote their wider applications with the approval and involvement of their holders, and encourage equitable sharing of the benefits of using this knowledge [Article 8(j)].
Implement Ex Situ Conservation Measures. Take measures for ex situ conservation (i.e., conservation outside the natural environment) of biodiversity components as an essential complement to the primary conservation measures of habitat protection and restoration. This includes establishment and maintenance of gene and seed banks [Article 9].
