ENZYMES STEM CASE
for biology!!!
Claire is the great dane dog.

1. How did Claire’s digestion reaction rates tell you that the problem was in her small intestine, and not in her stomach?

2. Explain how you determined that Claire had low enzyme production. Use your experimental data to explain how you ruled out active site mutations and abnormal pH.

3. How does Claire’s diagnosis explain why 1 mL of liquid from her small intestine digested protein slowly but 1 mg of her pure protease digested protein normally?

Answer:

I just did this lab for bio so here's what I put:

Explanation:

1) When comparing the data of Claire's digestion rates to a healthy dog, you can see that in her stomach, the rates were the same. However, if you look at the data from her small intestine, you can see that her digestion rate was much slower.

2) The data from the experiment regarding active site mutations showed that the enzymes were working properly and were not mutated. When analyzing the data from the experiment regarding abnormal pH, I saw that Claire's pH levels were withing the optimal range. Therefore it could not have been either of these issues. When comparing Claire's enzyme production with a healthy dog you can see that she produces enzymes at a very low rate. From this data, I determined that Claire's problem was low enzyme production.

3) Because the pure protease was just that, pure and concentrated. It showed that the protease that Claire did have was working properly. The small intestine liquid was less concentrated and therefore didn't work as well because of the lack of enzymes in it.
