Epidermal cells are often modified to perform specialized function in plants. Some of them are:-
1) Tri chomes - Epidermal in origin, these are either unicellular or multi cellular. These are of two types:- hair and scales. It is thought to be in plant defense against insects.
i) Stinging hair - protect plant from herbivores.
ii) Glandular hair - produce essential oils.
iii) Aerial hairs - protect plant against sudden changes of temperature.
iv) Root hairs - take part in absorption of water and minerals.
2) Stomata - Exchange of gases.
3) Emergences - Protect plant from excessive transpiration, grazing animals and sometimes help in climbing.
