Epidermis is protective in function, the cells of epidermis form a continuous layer without any intercellular spaces. Most epidermal cells are relatively flat. Often the outer and side walls are thicker than the inner walls. Their inner contents are similar to parenchyma cells, i.e., they have centrally placed vacuole, a nucleus and a thin peripheral cytoplasm.
