The pH of the resulting solution is 3.3

Explanation:

pH or pOH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

pH is calculated by taking negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration.

Acids have pH ranging from 1 to 6.9, bases have pH ranging from 7.1 to 14 and neutral solutions have pH equal to 7.

1. pH = 3

pH=-\log [H^+]

Putting in the values:

3=-\log[H^+]

[H^+]=10^{-3}

2. pH = 5

pH=-\log [H^+]

Putting in the values:

5=-\log[H^+]

[H^+]=10^{-5}

Thus total [H^+]=\frac{10^{-3}+10^{-5}}{2}=\frac{10^{-3}(1+10^{-2})}{2}=0.0005

pH of resulting solution , pH=-\log[H^+]=-\log[0.0005]=3.3
