Equal volumes of two gases A and B diffuse through a porous pot in 20 seconds and 10 seconds
respectively. If the molar mass of A is 20, calculate the molar mass of B.
please help me I am not getting and is confused

Answer:

The molar mass of B is 5 g/mol .

Explanation:

Volume of gas A = V

Diffusion rate of gas A = r=\frac{V}{20 s}

Molar mas of gas A = 20 g/mol

Volume of gas B = V

Diffusion rate of gas B = r'=\frac{V}{10 s}

Molar mas of gas B =M

Graham's Law:

This law states that the rate of effusion or diffusion of gas is inversely proportional to the square root of the molar mass of the gas. The equation given by this law follows the equation:

\text{Rate of diffusion}\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{\text{Molar mass of the gas}}}

\frac{r'}{r}=\sqrt{\frac{20 g/mol}{M}}

\frac{\frac{V}{10 s}}{\frac{V}{20 s}}=\sqrt{\frac{20 g/mol}{M}}

M = 5 g/mol

The molar mass of B is 5 g/mol .
