partial pressure of non - reacting gases is inversely proportional to mole fraction.

so, we have to find mole fraction of methane to find the fraction of the total pressure exerted by oxygen.

given, weight of methane = weight of oxygen = W (let)

  • molecular weight of CH4 = 16g/mol
  • molecular weight of O2 = 32g/mol

so, no of moles of CH4 = W/16

no of moles of O2 = W/32

now, mole fraction of O2 = {W/32}/{W/32 + W/16}

= {1/32}/{1/32 + 1/16}

= {1/32}/{1/32 + 2/32}

= {1/32}/{3/32}

= 1/3

hence, partial pressure of oxygen = 1/3 × total pressure.
