It is based on the following chemistry: H 2 S + H 2 SO 4 → SO 2 + 2H 2 O + S 2H 2 O + I 2 + SO 2 → H 2 SO 4 + 2HI 2HI → H 2 + I 2 The overall reaction is simply H 2 S → H 2 + S so the cycle apparently splits hydrogen sulphide into hydrogen and elemental sulphur.
