This reaction is called halogenation of methane. It include three steps.

INITIATION: In this step presence of sunlight cholrine undergoes homolytic fission to produce chlorine free radical.

PROPAGATION: In this step chlorine free radical attack on methyl free radical.

TERMINATION: Reaction comes to halt when any two free radical combines.
