SOLUTION

TO PROVE

Equation x² + 5x + 8 = 0 has no real roots.

CONCEPT TO BE IMPLEMENTED

For an given equation ax² + bx + c = 0

Discriminant = D = b² - 4ac

 • D = 0 gives two roots are real and equal

 • D > 0 gives two roots are real and unequal

 • D < 0 gives two roots are imaginary

EVALUATION

Here the given equation is x² + 5x + 8 = 0

Comparing with ax² + bx + c = 0 we get

a = 1 , b = 5 , c = 8

Discriminant = D =

= b² - 4ac

= {5}^{2} - 4 \times 1 \times 8

= 25 - 32

= - 7 < 0

Hence both roots are imaginary

Hence the Equation x² + 5x + 8 = 0 has no real roots.
