Answer : The value of K_{sp} of BaSO_4 is, 4\times 10^{-8}

Solution :

First we have to calculate the solubility of a BaSO_4 salt.

Formula used :

Solubility=\frac{k\times 1000}{\Lambda}

where,

k = specific conductance = 8\times 10^{-5}ohm^{-1}cm^{-1}

\Lambda = equivalent conductance = 400ohm^{-1}cm^{2}eq^{-1}

Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get the solubility.

Solubility=\frac{(8\times 10^{-5}ohm^{-1}cm^{-1})\times 1000}{400ohm^{-1}cm^{2}eq^{-1}}=2\times 10^{-4}

Now we have to calculate the value of K_{sp} of BaSO_4

The equilibrium reaction will be,

BaSO_4\rightleftharpoons Ba^{2+}+SO_4^{2-}

The expression of solubility product, K_{sp} will be,

k_{sp}=[Ba^{2+}][SO_4^{2-}]

k_{sp}=s\times s

k_{sp}=s^2

where, s is solubility

k_{sp}=(2\times 10^{-4})^2=4\times 10^{-8}

Therefore, the value of K_{sp} of BaSO_4 is, 4\times 10^{-8}
