equivalent mass of Fe₂S₃ is M/24.

It is given that molecular mass of Fe₂S₃ is M

we have to find equivalent mass of Fe₂S₃ when

Fe₂S₃ + 6O₂ ----> Fe₂O₃ + 3SO₃

  • oxidation state of S in Fe₂S₃ = -2
  • oxidation state of S in SO₃ = +6

Valence factor = change in oxidation numbers

= 3 × (+6) - 3 × (-2)

= 18 + 6

= 24

so, equivalent mass = molecular mass/Valence factor

= M/24

hence, equivalent mass of Fe₂S₃ is M/24.
