Molecular formula of potash alum is K_{2}SO_{4}.Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}.24H_{2}O

So we have two (+1) charges from K ions and two (+3) charges from Al ions

Total 8+ charges

Equivalent weight = \frac{Molecular weight}{total charges}

So as per question here x is 8

Molecular formula of gypsum CaSO_{4}.\frac{1}{2}H_{2}O

So we have one (+2) charge from Ca ion.

Total 2+ charges

So as per question y here is 2

Therefore x-y =  8-2 = 6
