I shall never forget the day on which I won the first prize at the Elocution Competition conducted by the Rotary Club of our town. It was a prestigious competition, and three of us from NMS callege were competing in various categories. Mahadeo Was to speak in Marathi, Vishnavi in Hindi, and I in English. My topic was ‘ India of my dreams’ I had prepared notes on the topic after many hours of hard thinking , and both my grandfather and my English teacher had checked it. It was a realistic essay, highlighting all the evilsthat existed in India, and their possible solutions. I took a lot of trouble practising my speech under the guidance of my English teacher, Mrs. Talwar, till I Felt sure I Could remember every word, and that my tone was perfect. However, I began to lose heart as the competition proressed. The speakers from the other colleges were excellent. Their material was superb. I felt that my speech would be dry and artificial. I began to feel nervous, and started losing confidence. All of a sudden. I felt I should not make my speech. I wanted to jump into an autorickshaw and run home. Mrs. Talwar, who was with us, noticed that I was upset. She took me out of the hall, and made me practice my speech again. Then she smilled, and gave me the victory sign. “ you are going to do it. Chin up “It was my turn at last. I stood on the podium , and looked at the audience. Then taking a deen breath. I began my speech. It went slowly at first, then the words flowed like a torrent. I felt as if I were conversing with the audience, telling them my observations, my hopes, my dreams. It was over at last, and I left the stage amidst thunderous applause. I was relieved that my turn was over. And hardly listened to the remaining speeches. Then came the announcement about the prize winners. The suspense was nerve-racking. But soon we bagan shouting with joy, For Vaishnavi won the second prize in Hindi; Mahadeo a consolation prize in Marathi, and I, much against my expectations the First prize in English. I felt as if my heart would burst with joy. To cap it all, our callege won the shield for scoring the maximum points as a team. After a well – deserved meal at a nearby restaurant, we all returned home. The next morning, the Pricipal praised and congratulated our team during Assembly, and the students burst into shouts of joy and cheers. The day of that Elocution Competition is a day I shall never forget, It has been the most memorable day of my life.
