Escape velocity is the speed at which something must be launched so that it can escape from the source of gravity it currently resides in, meaning that in principle it can get infinitely far away from the source without ever being pulled back.
Note that its value depends on the distance to the center of the source of gravity. When we talk about the “escape velocity of the Earth”, we generally mean from the surface of the Earth, about 6400 km from the center of the Earth.
