Accidents and People's Attitude
Accidents are quite a common sight on crowded Indian roads. However, what pains the heart is people’s reaction to accidents, especially the victims of the accidents. The general sight is people are in so much hurry that they don’t care for the safety of other people. This apathy to the human life is very hurting and disconcerting.
I happened to witness an accident recently that has compelled me to express my anguish on the issue. I was going home after my day’s work, when I saw the accident. It was a jam like situation at a busy roundabout. Every vehicle was in hurry to clear away from the place. Pedestrians were also risking their life by crossing to the other side. A white car was in unusual hurry. It was maneuvering threateningly among the other cautiously moving vehicles. As was being anticipated, it knocked down an elderly lady who was also in hurry to cross the crowded crossing.
The car tire just crushed her entire leg. She lay on the road crying in pain. The culprit car driver stopped his car, opened the door, looked at the lady in pain, and the moment he found he could escape; he sped away in his car. The worst aspect was, none of the passers-by came forward to help her. I was on the opposite side, trapped in slowly moving traffic. To my relief, some young men lifted the lady and took her away from the road. Another kind man stopped his car, and volunteered to take the lady to the hospital. But all this took a very long time, may be half an hour. The old lady kept crying and writhing in pain. This is what happens almost at all accident sites.
We need to change. The government needs to change. The law enforcement policies need to change.
