Karachi is the fourth most populous city in the world and its population is around 28 million. Every year in the monsoon season, the people of Karachi face water-clogged streets and power cuts. Although we wait for this season very eagerly, but when it starts, we pray for it to end soon as we all know about our ‘efficient’ drainage and sewerage system as well as the ‘highly effective’ government departments that manage them.

Like the past few years, this year we also faced difficulties. When this season starts, all the streets of Karachi are filled up with rainwater and the entire city was in darkness due to the tripping of the feeders. Not only local or suburban areas, but also the posh localities of DHA and Clifton went under the water: who knows how much of it was pure rainwater and how much was dirty sewage!

Everyone was struggling by themselves to save their vehicle or property from rainwater. The recently built and highly publicized Drigh road underpass does not have any drainage system installed for clearing rain water. If it rains heavily in Karachi again, this underpass will fill up and cause heavy losses to citizens, and will be a total loss in terms of the precious money the government used in the construction of under-bypass. The issue has been highlighted many times in the print and electronic media.

We request Karachi Mayor, Karachi Deputy Mayor, Commissioner Karachi, and senior officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to look into the matter thoroughly & take proper action and initiate a plan to maintain the sewerage line and road before monsoon season starts, so that the next rain may become a blessing for Karachi, like it was before these water clogging and gutter overflowing issues. Sindh Government is also requested to support the local government & used its authority to resolve the problem of the people of Karachi.
