Your grandpa and I were married before his last year of law school at UVA. The year before we got married, I started worrying about what kind of job I could get in Charlottesville so we could eat and pay rent. I was an art major in college and didn’t even know how to type and Charlottesville was full of college kids looking for work. How could I compete to find a decent job when I had no job skills? At a Bible study I attended the speaker talked about the importance of praying specifically-asking God for exactly what you want and need. Then, when the answer came, God would get the glory. I told your grandpa that we needed to sit down and make a detailed list of what I wanted and needed in a job and then ask the Lord to find me that job. We made a ridiculous list-
-that the job would be in art ( that seemed impossible but I figured I could ask!)
-that the job location would be close to the law school because we only had one car
-that the hours I would need to work would be compatible with your grandpa’s law school hours also because of the one car thing
-that I would be allowed to get off work when you grandpa had school holidays so we could go home to Georgia during those holidays ( I said this list was ridiculous!)
-that the job hours would let me get off early enough each day so I would have time to fix dinner and have time with Don
-that I would have nice people to work with-some Christians so we could talk about the Lord and some non-Christians so I could share Jesus with them ( I know- that seems like that includes everyone but bear with me-HE knew what I meant!)
your grandpa and I started praying for this list. Meanwhile I was working at the time at a plumbing company answering the phone. The owner of the company had hired me because he also was planning on building an art gallery and wanted me for consultation for that. Each day in the company mail he would get catalogs from art companies. One day I was very surprised and delighted to see a catalog of etchings. I had been an etching major and had no idea there was a company that sold them. They were college prints and lovely scenes. When I saw that the company was located in Charlottesville I started crying for joy because I KNEW this was going to be where I would be working!!!!!
In the spring before we got married, I took the train to Charlottesville to look for a job. your grandpa had all of his buddies at the law school praying for me and they were all sympathetic that I had to go look for a job. I was not worried even though I only had ONE plan- get to the printing company to ask for a job!!! your grandpa drove me to the company and sat out in the car praying for me as I went in carrying my portfolio. When I got inside, there was another man there with the boss and they both seemed interested in interviewing me. I sat and had coffee with them while the boss told me that he couldn’t possibly hire me because there was a recession and he had been laying off workers. They looked through my portfolio and the other man told the boss that he HAD to hire me. The boss agreed even though I told him I would only be in Charlottesville for one school year. He told me to report for work when we arrived in Charlottesville in the fall for Don’s classes. I had no idea what I would be doing but I had a job!!!! I knew that the boss would not have hired me if the other man had not been there and I knew that the Lord had set that up for me!! In the fall when we moved to Charlottesville, I went to receive my new job. It was far better than I could have imagined!! The location was near the law school and the hours were perfect. Four of us hand painted the etchings while we talked!! Talk about fun!! I would have paid them to let me do this all day!! There were two adorable Christian ladies who became my best friends and invited us to their little church in the country where we were the only white people present. There was a young man who painted with us and who had to listen to us talk about the Lord all day!!
Normally each painter was paid by the piece and it took awhile to get fast enough to make enough money but I was paid by the hour so I could update the original etchings that we copied as we painted. That helped a LOT so that your grandpa and I could eat!!
I asked the boss if I could get off when Don had holidays and he said, ” Why would I want you to come in if you didn’t want to!”
I loved every minute of that job and was AMAZED by the goodness of the Lord to give me a job that answered every item on my wish list!!
