All love is expansion and all selfishness is contraction:

Loving someone or the feeling of love is something which makes a person selfless and caring for others around him. The feeling of love makes a person attached to people around him which decreases the chances of a person being self-centred.

If a person doesn't think of himself more as compared to other people around him then definitely that person has a "big heart" and his thinking doesn't always revolve around himself. This means that thinking of that person doesn't have any boundaries and he can expand or spread the love as much as he can.

Being selfish on the other hand brings a feeling of self-love and self-centeredness. There is no harm in loving oneself but the bad thing comes when the thinking of that person remains and revolves around himself only and doesn't think of anyone else's happiness or comfort.

A selfish person won't be able to share his love with anyone else and won't care for anyone else more than himself and if he does so, that would too involve his interest in it. In short, the thinking and life of a selfish person always remain contracted and limited to himself.
