Answer:

The coronavirus family causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), according to the WHO.

They circulate in animals and some can be transmitted between animals and humans. Several coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

The new coronavirus, the seventh known to affect humans, has been named COVID-19.

Common signs of infection include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, it can cause pneumonia, multiple organ failure and death.

The incubation period of COVID-19 is thought to be between one and 14 days. It is contagious before symptoms appear, which is why so many people get infected.

Infected patients can be also asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems.

China alerted the WHO to cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan on December 31.

COVID-19 is thought to have originated in a seafood market where wildlife was sold illegally.

On February 7, Chinese researchers said the virus could have spread from an infected animal to humans through illegally trafficked pangolins, prized in Asia for food and medicine.

Scientists have pointed to either bats or snakes as possible sources.

The WHO declared the virus a pandemic on March 11 and said it was "deeply concerned by the alarming levels of spread and severity" of the outbreak.

The WHO recommends basic hygiene such as regularly washing hands with soap and water, and covering your mouth with your elbow when sneezing or coughing.

Maintain "social distancing" - keeping at least 1.8 metres (six feet) between yourself and others - particularly if they are coughing and sneezing, and avoid touching your face, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid unnecessary, unprotected contact with animals and be sure to thoroughly wash hands after contact.

Coronavirus

Coronavirus is an infectious disease with no vaccine or specific cure till date. The name is derived from Coronaviridae which are single-stranded RNA viruses. The name in short is Covid-19 which stands for Coronavirus Disease 2019. The year 2019 is the year when it was first discovered.

The disease spreads from person to person or from contact with objects contaminated by an infected person. The virus is said to have originally spread from bats to man at a Wuhan market in China. This highly contagious has now become a pandemic infecting millions of people and killing many people. Coronavirus infects the respiratory system and and rapidly destroys the lungs. Hence, a patient suffers much from difficulty in breathing and needs a respiratory machine. A vaccine or a cure for any new infectious disease cannot be developed immediately because it is necessary to conduct many procedures of tests and trials before being produced for use in hospitals or for use by the general public. It may take months or even years to come up with a proven and safe vaccine.

The most common symptoms of Coronavirus disease are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. A person with any of the symptoms must wear a mask and avoid closeness or contact with anyone to prevent infecting other people and go immediately to a hospital for test and treatment.

Any person suspected of being infected by Covid-19 or those who came in contact with an infected person are placed in quarantine centers. This prevents the disease from spreading further to family members and other people of our communities. During the quarantine period, blood samples are send for testing to find out who is infected and needed to be taken to a Covid-19 hospital.

Washing our hands and maintaining social distancing are the most effective ways to break the alarming chain of infection. As the cases of the Coronavirus is increasing, countries across the world are making laws for compulsory wearing of surgical masks and implementing the Stay Home lockdown to stop the pandemic.
