Conscience is one’s judgment in the area of morality. Everyone has a conscience. It is innate to mankind. It gauges whether one is acting in accordance with what he deems to be morally right or wrong. It’s judgment can be adversely affected by upbringing, environment, and culture. Therefore, conscience is not infallible. One can be sincere, desiring to do the right thing in accordance with their conscience and can make the wrong moral choice due to a lack of knowledge and life experience. On the other hand, a world without conscience would be completely given over to anarchy and evil. The conscience is a gift from God to help establish a sense of order and well-being.

The Old Testament teaches that the conscience is in the heart of man. The word conscience is not found in the Old Testament but the function of the conscience is; and it is referred to as the heart. Accordingly to Helmut Thielicke, the context in which the heart is normally used in reference to the conscience is seen in the issue of sin. When a sin is committed the heart protests the act. This confrontation of the heart is the point at which repentance can begin to take place.

How does the conscience act? The conscience is the inner voice; God’s imperative in the soul.  The conscience is the dialogue that man has with himself about himself to himself. I remember as a child watching the cartoon “Tom and Jerry”. Tom was facing a moral dilemma. Instantly in a puff of smoke, a little devil in the image of Tom appeared on Tom’s shoulder speaking in his left ear and appealing to his lower nature.  Then, a little Tom angel flutters down, making earnest appeals for Tom to do the right thing. Tom would be in utter conflict as his alter egos were battling it out to direct Tom’s behavior. The conscience has three ways in which it acts: “(1) Obligatory: It urges man to do that which he regards as right and restrains him from doing that which he regards as wrong. (2) Judicial: Conscience passes judgment upon man’s decisions and acts. (3) Executive: Conscience executes its judgment in the heart of man. It condemns his action when in conflict with his conviction by causing an inward disquietude, distress, shame, or remorse. It commends when man has acted in conformity with his convictions.”

The conscience within the deadened spirit of the unregenerate man is a residue from creation that cries out against man who was made in the image of God, the Imago Dei. The conscience bears witness and testifies against man while trying to guide him to do what is right. The conscience then raises objections against the accusations. The conscience accuses, then excuses. The conscience attacks, and then defends. The conscience is an echo from the past that points back to the fall of man and in the future the conscience will awaken at the trumpet’s blast and stand in silence without excuse at the Judgment seat of Christ. Within his soulish realm his conscience produces feelings of remorse, depression, shame, guilt, and condemnation. These problems eventually can lead to a multitude of problems including anxiety, alcohol, drug abuse, neuroses and mental illness.

Fallen man, from the beginning of time has believed that the condemnation from a guilty conscience will cease if one can do enough good deeds to outweigh their bad ones. Restitution is important but there is still something lacking; peace with God. People think that if they can just tip the scales of justice in their favor they can make up for their past short comings; if they just give more to the united way, work a little harder for a good cause, be a do-gooder and give back to the community.

Being good, doing good, going to church, singing the choir, are soulish methods that do not put us in right standing with a Holy God. We can only make it right by accepting His payment plan for our sin sick soul.

Loving God with all your soul: mind, will and emotions, and all your spirit: conscience, intuition and communion with God, requires spiritual discipline, otherwise known as discipleship. There is a process through which a regenerated man can have a complete mental “make over” and develop a healthy soul and spirit.

We are held to a higher standard as our soul and spirit are transformed to reflect more of the image of God’s dear son. Spiritual transformation takes place during acts of worship, prayer, memorizing and the meditation on scripture.

There is also inspiration and transformation that comes from reading biographies of great Christians and learning from their examples of holy living. Most of all, our soul and spirit are infused with power from on high as we study the example of Christ. We learn of his life and teachings and are baptized in the Holy Spirit as he was baptized in the river Jordan by John.

There is Wisdom of Head, and a Wisdom of the Heart

Wisdom of the head as well as wisdom of the heart are most sought after rarities in the world. Both types of wisdom can be likened to divine maturity that is gained after lots of experience. The wisdom of the head can be likened to super intelligence, whereas the wisdom of the head can be likened to super emotional intelligence guided by intuition. We can not say which wisdom is better? Wisdom is ultimate possession; either of the two types is sufficient to make the possessor contented and successful.

When God asked Solomon what blessings He should shower on him, Solomon supplicated, “Give me wisdom and knowledge.” He is considered the wisest of kings of all times. If the wisest king asked wisdom from God, there must be something unique about wisdom. Wisdom is the magic lamp of Aladdin. If you have it, you have everything. Wisdom actually is the ability to stay positive even in the most negative situations. If you have wisdom, you can achieve anything in life.

Success is a highly elusive thing! But those with right efforts, right thoughts, and right action catch the ever elusive snitch-like( Harry Potter's Quidditch winning ball) golden ball of success. So one must not aim for success, rather one must aim for acquiring the right thoughts. Once thoughts are right, action and efforts automatically align themselves accordingly. This is not a simple process! One really has to work very hard to get the grail of wisdom. One must read a lot of books full of wisdom. There is no dearth of such books. Actually beginning to read books is the beginning of wisdom. Books actually are nothing but the recorded thoughts and experience of great wise men. So when we read a book, we actually read the thoughts and arduously collected life experiences. Once the thoughts become wise through reading, introspection, pondering, and reflection, one's actions become wiser; and success for a truly wise man is a cinch.

Confucius, a great Chinese philosopher and teacher wisely said “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”
