Answer:
I prepared from Lucknow and hence Delhi coaching used to always be the awe inspiring ones. I used to watch videos of successful candidates religiously. I am sure all the candidates I have heard have performed well with diligence but what caught my attention was this video-
A little background about the person- Bhavesh Mishra, Rank 58, Civil Services Examination 2014. Cracked the exam in first attempt. Is a 9 pointer from IIT Delhi.
Now you might think, what is so great about him. He is not even Ranker in top 10 and almost half of the Top Rankers are from IIT! Well, his start is what inspired me, and continues to inspire me. Bhavesh spent his childhood in Bihar. He did not attend even regular school ( because there weren't any teachers). He hails from a humble background.
When he moved to Delhi, Bhavesh barely knew English. It was troublesome. English is the de facto lingua franca in all Delhi schools. Once out of the pristine and somber life of Madhepura, he had no friends in Delhi. He would spend hours studying and learning English. At a time when kids of the so-called Delhi neighbourhoods used to plan picnics, this geek was solving maths problems from his elder brother's course books.
Everyone around him knew that civil services is something he should give a try at. But as things would have it, he got placement after college and his budget did not allow him to leave a well paying job for an exam full of uncertainty. But he did not let his dream die a silent death. While working in a demanding sector like High Frequency Trading, he came home after 12 hours of work and studied. It was only after he had had a saving did he leave his job to give a full fledged attempt. Only to join back the same job after writing Mains.
Here one must also see his practical approach. As a Maths optional aspirant, Bhavesh had skipped two topics that costed him 100 marks in Paper I. This is a sufficient divide to push someone out of the list. He was crestfallen given that Maths was his love and he chose the subject knowingly well that it has a large syllabus. But hard work is nothing he has ever shyed from. After Mains, he hoped for the best and prepared himself for the worst. Despite his family being in Delhi, he would rarely go home.
To support his finances, he rejoined the hectic job, sailed through mains and prepared for interview along with the job scoring a stellar 209 in the interview. In fact in his interview stage, he was a bit skeptical for he thought his English was sub-optimal. (I even till day mock him for his pronunciation of 'passion', using 'ss' instead of 'sh'). But all his fears were unfounded. He aced the interview. All this along with a job, financial constraints and in first attempt.
Of all the things, the fact that inspired me the most is his simplicity. He would mentor me over phone calls while he was posted as Assistant Collector Bhagalpur and not even once did he threw any air that made me believe I am talking to an IAS officer. And in this case, a well accomplished one.
As an add on, I write this answer not as his wife but as a former aspirant who got success only because of a good mentor and friend that Bhavesh is. There were times I would talk to him all frustrated and he would never lose cool. He actually gets angry rather rarely.
I am sure there may be many other legends who have struggled more than Bhavesh, but to the best of my knowledge, Bhavesh stands out.
