Nowadays, advertising plays a pivotal role in media. In the newspapers that people read everyday, advertisements account for almost all of the content. Massive investments are also made to advertising industry. In my perspective, advertising brings both beneficial and adverse outcomes to our daily lives.
Advertising offers definite perks to manufacturers, customers and society as a whole. The first advantage is that it sets up a direct link between sellers and buyers. Through ads, new products can be introduced into the market and customers are well-informed of these products. This aids to eliminate the existence of middle men, thus helps the manufacturers to gain more profits as well as lowers the price of products for purchaser. Another point in favor of advertising is that it creates more employment oppotunities for a variety of people such as painters, singers, models, cartoonists and people working in advertising agencies. This supports the goverment to tackle the issue of employment and contributes to the economic growth.
On the other hand, advertising industry brings some negative impacts to our lives. The major drawback is that commercials sometime baffle purchaser. Believing in ads, customers go to buy a product just to find out later that the information given in ads was quite different to the actual product, which causes the buyers to lose their faith in commercials. This confuses customers rather than helps them. One additional disadvantage of advertising is that it may contain inappropriate contents. For example, cigarette ads have images of people smoking, which might encourage children or adolescence to develop a habit of smoking from a young age.
