River rafting is not a very widely known activity. However, for adventure lovers like me, it was not just exciting but also a very memorable experience. It was last year that my father took us to Rishikesh, the white water rafting destination of India. The three highlights of that trip were the thrill of the activity, our teamwork, and the beauty of nature.
To begin with,our instructor fitted us with the safety gear- life jackets and helmets and gave us instructions on how to handle the ride. Each one of us were given oars and instructed to work as a team. Though the instructor was a young man, everyone took him seriously. He was the leader of our team and motivated everyone, even when we got tired of rowing.
The sight of our bright orange raft filled us with excitement. I was finally going to do what I had always dreamt of doing. The journey down the river began smoothly until we hit the first set of rapids. That is when there was a little turbulence under the raft but we covered that part quickly. Soon we got a hang of how to negotiate the rapids, but we were just not prepared for the difficult rapids. They sent the raft a few inches above the water and each time we landed with a big splash. All the while we were in air, it was as if my heart was in my mouth. I felt a great sense of achievement after each set and more so at the end of the activity.
Since our instructor, who was well-versed with the river was looking out for the rapids, we got a chance to admire the unspoilt natural beauty along the banks of the river. The trees cast their shade on the waters while the wind blew little flowers and leaves into the air, which then landed on the water and floated along with us.
All said and done, though river rafting was indeed scary at times, if given a chance, I would love to be a part of another such adventure and enjoy the camaraderie on board a raft with a dash of adrenaline rush in the midst of beautiful settings.
