Artificial Intelligence is a phenomenon in computer science that enables machines to have varying attributes of human intelligence. This is to say that the machines can imitate human behavior. Much has been said about this issue by people in different fields of expertise. There have been arguments on its impact on humanity.

Artificial Intelligence poses threat to humanity. Respected individuals in the field of science and technology have voiced their concerns on this issue. Bill Gates who is the co-founder of Microsoft has raised his concerns regarding AI from time to time. This has happened on different technological summits. He is more worried about the fact that people do not seem to be worried by this issue at all (DeLooper, 2015). According to him, there is need to feel more concerned about the issue since it will have more negative impacts on humanity than most people anticipate.   Stephen Hawking who is a cosmologist and theoretical physicist has also warned of the imminent threats that are likely to accrue with the use of AI in the development of weapons. In 2014, he cautioned people that development of full Artificial Intelligence would spell the end of the human race. Motors CEO; Elon Musk has also made a contribution to this issue.  In 2014, he donated $10 million USD to FSI so that they can run a global research program that would help to avoid the threats associated with AI (DeLooper, 2015). Musk views Artificial Intelligence as an “existential risk”. Nick Bostrom who is a philosopher has published a book that explains how and why AI is catastrophically dangerous to humanity. This is just to mention a few individuals that think AI is a threat to humanity. These people are well informed with regards to science and technology, and therefore, their sentiments should not be ignored.

Answer:

They say there are two sides of a coin, I say there are three, the third one being the one where it is balanced between a head and a tail.

Similar is the case of humans and artificial intelligence, one side is intelligence displayed by the machines, other side the one possessed by humans, if by chance, some external force comes and changes the balance, it would make one the ruler and other the slave.

So what is the problem with artificial intelligence ruling mankind:-

1) They are programmed devices and lack any trait of creativity and have a defined pattern of doing things. This will make everything constant and no development or efficient methods of doing things would come up.

2) They have high maintenance costs and can develop a fault at any time hence they are not reliable. If there is a fault they may even do opposite of what is required and may turn destructive for mankind.

3) If some humans acquire higher information about artificial intelligence they will tend to misuse this knowledge and this may turn the world upside down for one day, artificial intelligence can even displace it's controller, as it has the ability to learn from past experiences and perform better.

4) Machines are programmed by a number of people, they put their intelligence together to design something even smarter and in this case, a particular advance to machines is they lack emotions, which will allow them to be at their best even in the most tense situations and their acquired information can be much more than humans for the size of human brain is limited but that of A.I. can be limitlessly large.

Additionally extensive use of artificial intelligence will increase unemployment and will be a threat to livelihood of many, and also it will create health problems for people who will turn lazier by the day. Our great friend, the smartphone is also an example where A.I. with features like GPS and speech recognition overcomes human power.
