More Aspire for the Future Every child aspires at a young age to be something great when they grow up. Of course, like most little girls, I aspired to become a nurse. From my grandfather being in hospice and my great grandmother living in a nursing home, I was interested in the medical field at a very young age. I never once thought that I would change the direction I wanted to go in because I have a determined personality type. During my junior year of high school this would all change. I realized the world is not a nice place like it is portrayed to be as a young child. I realized that I need to be the change in the world I wanted to see, so I took on that challenge to myself. It was time for lunch and we were assisting feeding with some residents that were not able to feed themselves. Doing what I was told, I feed the women I was supposed to and I socialized with her too, like an STNA should. Often, this is the only socialization some have the whole day. The STNA I was shadowing continued to degrade this man telling him he was nasty because he could not swallow his already puréed food correctly. Because of instruction from my teacher, I had to keep my mouth shut and not cause a scene, but above all, you could see the hurt in the man’s eyes. The aspects of quality care clearly were not met by this particular STNA and she did not use compassion. I am happy to say that I did meet some very good nurses and aids during my shadowing times that had very good aspects of quality care. The first stage of the hierarchy is physiological, second is safety, third is social, forth is esteem and the fifth and final stage is self-actualization. For the second stage to be reached, physiological has to be reached first and so on and so forth. The final stage, self-actualization, can only be reached if the four below it are completed in order first. This hierarchy is used throughout the world to make sure motivational needs are met. Many times these needs are not met and residents are left depressed and dependent of others. This was the case with many residents in all of the nursing homes I attended.
