आत्मनिर्भर का सही मतबल तो यह होता है कि कोई भी व्यक्ति, गाँव या देश किसी दूसरे के सहारे या किसी दूसरे पर निर्भर नहीं होकर खुद पर निर्भर रहे। आत्मनिर्भर होना खुद के लिए, अपने गाँव, शहर, जिले और देश के लिए बहुत जरूरी है। यदि हमारा शहर या देश आत्मनिर्भर रहेगा तो हमें किसी दूसरे देश पर निर्भर नहीं रहना होगा।
कोई भी व्यक्ति यदि किसी दूसरे पर निर्भर है, हर काम या अपनी आवश्यकता के लिए दूसरे की मदद की गुहार करता है तो उसके लिए यह बहुत बड़ी कमी है। उसे खुद पर निर्भर होना चाहिए न कि किसी दूसरे पर। यदि व्यक्ति आत्मनिर्भर होगा तो किसी भी समय उस पर कोई भी मुश्किल या मुसीबत आये तो वह खुद ही उसे सुलझा सकता है। बल्कि उसे किसी दूसरे की कोई जरूरत नहीं पड़ती।
